Unlocking Success in an Accounting Career: Tips for Students

Launching an accounting career can be an exciting yet daunting journey, especially while in college. As a former accounting student who successfully navigated the path leading to a career doing what I love, I’d like to share some valuable insights I learned along the way about what classes, tips, and advice students should consider while in school to ensure a successful transition into the workforce.

Some recommendations I would make to students include:

Utilizing Career Fairs
I attended multiple career fairs while in college. These events provide an invaluable opportunity to practice and enhance your professional skills, which are essential when entering the competitive accounting field. They allow you to interact with potential employers, receive feedback on your resume, and hone your interviewing skills. By participating in career fairs, I gained confidence in presenting myself as a promising candidate.

Networking
Networking is the lifeblood of any industry, and the accounting field is no exception. Attending networking events allowed me to explore various career opportunities and make connections within the accounting industry. These connections not only provided insights into different career paths but also served as valuable sources of guidance and mentorship.

Connecting with Alumni
Connecting with alumni can be a game-changer. I had the privilege of meeting UNH alumni who were working at prestigious firms like LMR. These connections inspired me with their stories and  provided invaluable insight into different firms and positions.

Immersing Yourself in the Curriculum
A strong foundation of accounting knowledge is crucial to a successful accounting career. I immersed myself in a well-rounded accounting curriculum that covered areas such as tax, audit, and financial reporting. This comprehensive education not only prepared me for my future career but also set me on the right track for passing the CPA exams.

Connect with Professors
Lastly, make an effort to connect with your professors. They are not just educators but also experienced professionals in the field. Seeking mentorship and gaining insight into their experiences can be incredibly beneficial. They can guide you in your academic journey and provide real-world perspectives on the accounting industry.

Attending career fairs, actively networking, connecting with alumni, immersing yourself in the curriculum, joining student organizations, and building relationships with professors can all help you pave the way for a successful and fulfilling accounting career. Remember, success in accounting is not solely about numbers; it’s also about the connections you make, the skills you develop, and the knowledge you acquire along the way.
